Obituary | Jana Novotná | 2 October 1968 – 19 November 2017

“Watching Jana Novotná play tennis was a pure adrenaline rush – you didn’t dare take your eye off the gifted, acrobatic athlete for fear you’d miss a shot destined for ESPN’s Top Plays.  She was perpetual motion on court” - International Tennis Hall of Fame

It is with great sadness that we report the the passing of the former Wimbledon Champion, Jana Novotná, aged 49. Novotna was born in Czechoslovakia in 1968 and began her professional tennis career in February 1987.

Novotná boasted numerous achievements during her 14-year career. At Wimbledon she tasted victory no fewer than 6 times. Four times she won the women’s doubles, and another, the mixed doubles. She reached the singles finals 3 times, before adding the singles Wimbledon title to the list in her 1998 game against Nathalie Tauziat. 29 at the time, this made her the oldest winner of all major singles titles in history – the record stood until 2010 when it was beaten by Francesca Schiavone.

As further proof of her range, Novotná won titles on all four surfaces and clocked more than 500 singles victories and 100 titles overall. She achieved both WTA World No.1 doubles and world No.2 singles rankings. As her Wimbledon record attests, her legacy as a doubles player is significant. Of her 17 major titles 16 were one in doubles games.

Her contribution to women’s tennis will be remembered  – a true great of the game.
