Andy Murray’s comeback delayed

Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray’s return to tennis following back surgery has been postponed after Richard Gasquet withdrew from their forthcoming event at the Dream Cup exhibition in Barbados.

Juan Martin Del Porto and Nicolas Almagro were also due to take part in the event at the end of November, however following an elbow injury to Gasquet, the event was cancelled as a suitable replacement was not available at such short notice.

Murray had been forced to withdraw from the French Open in May due to a lingering problem, but came back strongly at the end of June to become the first Brit to win the Wimbledon men’s Singles title since Fred Perry in 1936. He underwent back surgery in September following his quarter final loss at the US Open, deciding to end the season early and miss the ATP World Tour Finals in favour of additional recovery time between Grand slams. Having already stated his priority to add to his grand slams tally ahead of reaching World Number 1 it is no surprise that he has chosen to make the most of the available window.

The Wimbledon Champion recently uploaded a picture of himself getting back on court for the first time at his base in Miami quoting ‘Sun is shining, back on the courts’.

Following the late cancellation Murray will now continue to train in Miami and will head to Abu Dhabi for an exhibition against Jo Wilfred Tsonga on 26th December before his first competitive return to action at Doha the following week.

It is still not confirmed whether he will take part at the Australian Open which begins on the 13th January where previously he has performed well, finishing runner-up 3 times, including last year where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the Final.
